Proctor Guidelines

Proctor guidelines define how Kryterion proctors supervise exams to protect the integrity of every test session. They cover what proctors check before an exam starts, what they watch for during the session, and how they respond when something looks wrong.

The guidelines that apply depend on how and where a candidate takes the exam. Test sponsors choose the delivery method and security level that fit their program, and the proctor follows the matching set of guidelines.

Why these guidelines matter

Consistent proctoring means every candidate is held to the same standard, whether they test in a center or from home. For test sponsors, it means exam results can be trusted and security incidents are handled the same way every time.

Guideline types

Kryterion Testing Network (KTN) Guidelines
Rules followed by proctors at in-person KTN testing centers. Covers candidate check-in and ID verification, testing room setup, permitted and prohibited items, and how incidents are handled on site.

Standard Online Proctoring Guidelines
Rules for remotely proctored exams taken from the candidate's own location. Covers system and environment checks, identity verification, live monitoring, and the behaviors that prompt a proctor to intervene.

High Stakes Online Proctoring Guidelines
Enhanced rules for online exams that need a higher level of security. Builds on the standard online guidelines with stricter environment requirements, closer monitoring, and additional alerting and escalation when a potential violation is detected.

Choosing the right guidelines

If you're not sure which guidelines apply to your exam, check the delivery method and security settings configured for your test in Webassessor, or contact your Kryterion account representative.
